I have missed this little spot as a place of spare time to fill with reverie& quiet moods. I have been out of here because my camera is old and tiring. but I'm working on it :)
here are some pictures with Betu the cat and some presents I got from my friends. the letters are made of old wood from ships that couldn't be restored any longer. I love the layers of paint, the holes from the needles and the traces of aquamarine life on the wood.

pretty much did nothing today, it felt good to have this lazy Monday just for killing time. I received this knitting patterns book from '59 with a "recipe" for knitting socks inside... I understood 30% of the tutorial there :), but I love the book and I want to learn how to make socks. being "the handmade type" has its benefits, like receiving this gift, but its downsides too (like being asked to repair zippers or sometimes being offered old naphthalene smelling things from people who don't need them anymore... ah, the confusion between handmade and "stuff grandmas do", maybe I will get back on that subject one day).
so it's April, so where's my spring?

pictures from last Wednesday's screening of An Island movie. thumbs up for Efterklang and Eimi. for Efterklang for just being who they are as a band and for Eimi because she is the first one to bring the documentary in Romania. thumbs down for myself and Vincent Moon. for myself because I had a terrible headache throughout a most expected evening and for Vincent Moon for paying more attention to his cinematographic style rather than just observing the members of Efterklang with a camera on his shoulder. there should have been so much more to be seen/shown in 45 minutes when choosing a subject as such. then again, maybe it was just me having a headache. a good thing the director accomplished is that many persons who weren't familiar with the music, were pleased to make acquaintance.

on a Sunday afternoon with a visible&high on the sky moon, I checked out this goodies shop. there was the sound of the blender machine and the smell of hot sweets. baking was involved! the shop is lovely crowded with different sorts of ingredients that you would want to buy and spice your everyday food. it kind of feels like you're in a perfumery with A LOT of fragrances and if you're not a hardcore gourmand, you can easily get dizzy from... everything there. the owner of the place was kind enough to let us taste pretty much everything we put our hands on: truffles pesto, variations of goat cheese, porcini bread, olive oil fried bread, salami, we savored mastiha, grappa and a 21 plants liqueur... yummy! there should be more places like this.
when we got out of there, tipsy and confused, the moon was still up and proud of it. I found out the perigee was to come in a few days, which means the moon will be at its closest point to earth once a month. I was not at all familiar with the term. are you?

last November I wanted to see Efterklang in concert in Bruxelles, but ended up having other plans, mwell... then I found out about this documentary they released this February and wanted to plan another escape from everyday life to see them live and An Island documentary screening before the concert. fortunately Eimi managed to bring the documentary right here in Bucharest. it will be shown this Wednesday, March the 16th, 9pm in club Tralala (43 Lipscani). if you want to see something beautiful, come and join! free entrance by courtesy of Efterklang and Vincent Moon.

in January I had an idea for this tote bag, but waited 'till spring to show it to you. yesterday I finished the first model and gave it as a gift. looking forward to making one for myself and some more for Ulabelula although I bumped my head many times during the process of making it. logistics was a pain in the ass, hopefully the first time is the hardest time ;) it is hand painted, machine sewed and has an exterior back pocket.

every day I startle at the sight of snow outside. the sun has changed. it warms my bed as I wake up and I swear I can hear a new bird song in the tree at my window, the spring/ summer kind of chirping. in my head it's spring already.
this spring will start on a different note for me. I am skeptical. I am still lingering to my favourite colours, but they say it's good to be more chromatic. it's a figure of speech. mmmh, a little bit of red...

these are the things that I kept from my childhood. I am not a person who clings to the past, but these three objects I would take them anywhere I'd be.
the Milcov radio has been a big influence on me. on Sundays, as a child, I used to sit in the kitchen listening to the French classics singing while my mom was cooking. that's why later on I was a big fan of the French music channels, then remembered Truffaut and discovered Nouvelle Vague, bref loving the French culture just because. and even nowadays I prefer to linger in the kitchen, radio on, thinking or having long discussions, drinking my tea or cooking. this very radio was bought from my father's first pay and, since he is very inventive, he transformed it into an alarm clock as well :).
then there is this Chinese clock that totally fascinated me while growing up because the numbers showing the hours were phosphorous and as the clock was starting to shine in the dark I knew it was late enough for Studio X, on the Bulgarian television, that was broadcasting, uhh, such good movies late at night. it is also a reminder of the early school mornings, dim light outside, steaming cup of chaudeau on the kitchen table (and I have no idea if the word is written right).
last, but not least, the bear! yes, the bear that makes me fancy bear-like-people because I associate them with safety, protection, cosiness and joie de vivre. this is Paulica, the main character of my first decade. the picture does him too much justice when, in fact, he's so trashy& torn like a grunge character. he had his arms, legs and head fallen so many times, but every time it happened it was an absolute tragedy. and, yeah, I was so disturbed and careful while having to sew him up.

have been thinking of things I like and want versus available options. my preferences have been settled for quite some time. I have my favourite colours, I know precisely what drinks I won't order when I'm out, what gives me headaches, what kind of beards melts my eyes or the type of holiday destinations to make me yawn. so? what good is there in knowing what colours you want to paint your days when the only available colours are pink, golden and, let's say, brown? settle for less or change the scenery in search for more options. easier said than done in both cases. or is it trying to keep your head up while going through pink on your way to navy blue? ah questions, one too many.

let me introduce you to a new gentleman in town, Monsieur Lepic. he was inspired by the character with the same name from Poil de carotte. this Monsieur Lepic is more sympathetic than the guy in the book though. and has a peculiar taste in clothing. he is a party trooper by night and studies ladybugs and philosophy by afternoons. and he treasures his badminton sessions. never seen more than 3 movies in a row that I like. but this time, yeah, I picked up the ones to my taste. this? too sad, but can get you in a writing mood. as for the second one, recommended by eimi, well, I tilted my head like a startled dog at the directing of the movie- surprisingly fresh, not following success guaranteed recipes, but delicately and discreetly dipping into a more personal point of view. besides it's somehow hot. what else? the latest woody allen, a personal favourite character who can rarely go wrong in my opinion. if you buy his established receipt of whining about the purpose of life disguised in a humorous story, go for it! and he won't lead you into disillusion with his conclusions :). then there's Jeff Bridges revisiting the Coen brothers. yap, yap, yap, good! and last, but not least, a soft spot. all I can say is that my heart started going bum when I first heard Sofia Coppola is releasing her fourth movie. I really dig her style!
the books in the second picture, I searched for them online to help preserve someone's memories from childhood. sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite, dear kid!

I got an unexpected invitation to a birthday sitting& sipping gathering, so I quickly improvised a little wishing box: filling it with small symbols of my wishes for the celebrator. the process of putting this together was more fun than the actual result, but at least my intentions were good. here they are:
the vintage military button stands for the force and power one needs to accomplish things;
the feather should smoothly and lightly help dreams come true;
a marble for always taking pleasure in what one does;
cinnamon& cloves for, well, spicing up the days;

I love Efterklang because they remind me of what I want from life. whenever I feel lost I watch them play for they touch a very intimate spot inside in a way I can't explain. but I can tell that they sum what I appreciate most in life; they are talented, but modest. creative and original, but so playful. hardworking though always fun. and their music fits my dreams. I wish we would all be a step closer to what we really want and are. and next year I would love to find and keep the feeling of pure simple joy I get from the video above. happy 2011!

my parents. to me mom had the most perfect small, mat white hands with always an impeccable manicure. when I first noticed that those hands start to resemble my grandmother's translucent palms I was secretly shocked and disappointed. parents don't have the right to age... later on when her hands were deformed by illness I stopped claiming my parents to stay young. in a way, as a child, I waited to grow up and have hands just like hers, but that didn't happen, our hands are definitely different. my father's hands are so reassuring. they are quite large, but very gentle- I like this contrast a lot. his hands have their special way with calligraphy, cooking, working with wood and many others, but foremost with never letting go of a hand in need.
while taking the pictures it got to me that they met on the 29th of December. a lovingly coincidence. the snapshotting was full of laughters, losing balance and boycotting the one behind the camera.

I made this Christmas wreath for my brother. unfortunately I was too lazy and too busy at the same time to make some more for Ulabelula.

I think I like Christmas preparations with all the anticipation more than the actual holiday. late in the evening, even though we were tired, I wanted to cook ginger biscuits for friends. I cut them letter shaped as initials of my friends' names. it turned out to be a dizzy, but nice, energetic play for exhausted people. maybe I'll show you tomorrow what turned out of it. merry Christmas everyone! the other night someone asked "so are you guys in a Christmas mood yet?" "on the contrary", I rushed to reply. mmmwell, I've always felt there are two kinds of people- the Christmas people and the New Year's Eve folks. I definitely am the Christmas type. still I booed Christmas last night 'cause I'm focused on what I don't have in life at the moment. so the jingling mood of haveyourselfamerrylittlechristmas only makes me roar like an angry skeptic. besides it's way too early for " tree tops glisten and children listen ", right? ... right? fast forward to this morning and here I am... excitingly working on a "25 Days of Christmas" playlist for friends. hey, I admitted I am a Christmas junkie so stop rolling your eyes.. reconstructing my grandparents: in my grandparents' house there were chairs exactly like the one in the picture above. that's why, when I saw this abandoned chair on the street in a poor condition, I took it home and restored it. reminds me of rum flavored tea and gatherings around my grandmother knitting wool socks and telling us stories of world war two with the Russian invasion, refugee caravans, brothers dead on the battlefield or, to our delight, ghost tales she believes to be authentic even nowadays :)

era final de mai cand acest urs cu avioane si nasturi praz a fost scos in lume la targ unde a cunoscut multa lume. apoi a fost luat de M. care l-a botezat Sifon si l-a luat in vacanta la Paris... cu avionul.

30 de ore atipice la mare. fara guvizi mancati cu mainile imbibate de creme si nisip, fara sare de mare in par si priviri, lene solara, pasi tarsaiti sau ochi mijiti. am mers la galop, am vorbit putin si am ascultat mult, am dormit in cearsafuri albe scrobite, cu dantela pe la margini, intr-o casa cu cerga pe jos, multe obiecte cu Papa Ioan Paul al 2lea, alb si lemn, busuioc, usturoi, sanziene, ardei agatate de grinzile din bucatarie, obloane, ceas cu pendul, Mozart für Kinder, crema naturala emolienta pentru decolteu si gat, apa plata rrrece in ulcior de lut, am mancat intr-un balcon titirit cu fata de masa aspra, servetele, jardiniere si cesti inflorate minuscule de cafea cu marginea subtire, am ascultat povesti despre sasii din Sibiu, lectii de germana, arbore genealogic cu strabunicul plecat in America si...

oriunde te uitai un alb orbitor de nunta, luat pe sus de briza, povesti despre henry miller si pescarusi enormi.

concert Mika pe plaja la care nu aveam nici o intentie sa ma duc, dar m-am razgandit datorita Cut Copy din deschidere. pana la urma totul a fost ireprosabil- sonorizare, voce, energie pozitiva. nu, nu as asculta nici acum mika in casti, dar palaria jos pentru un showman cu o energie molipsitoare.

un festin delicios intr-o mansarda
o discutie despre japonia, da, de oftat si notat

de cateva saptamani tanjesc dupa peisaje rurale, dar mirosul ploii de astazi si gustul de rasina din branza in scoarta de brad au pus capac!!! imi trebuie doar un rucsac, un hanorac, cateva zile fara ploaie, muzica in urechi, rabdare pentru 7-8 ore de mers cu trenul si chef de munca fizica (...altfel cum?!)

duminica, pe caldura, am facut un picnic cu prilejuri aniversare intarziate, iar acesta este albumul duminical al zilei

reteta de biscuiti am luat-o de aici... un maxim de crocanteala delicioasa:)

si s-a batut recordul la cel mai mare cadou pe care l-am primit vreodata, inducator de gura cascata, dar si de vanatai, julituri& adrenalina... momentan botezata "cloanta" de managera de proiect al cadoului, eimi, dar ii caut un nume pentru ca (inca) nu sunt o ciclista relaxata, iar "cloanta" ma intimideaza...

30 de intepaturi de paianjeni, furnici& alte insecte neidentificate mai tarziu...

intotdeauna cand primesc ceva, las sa troneze pe birou, la vedere, cateva zile pana ce gasesc un loc pentru fiecare, dar si pentru ca asa prelungesc placerea de a avea ceva nou. astazi: un carnetel cu coperti de Nicoletta Ceccoli, o pisica de lemn, cutie de nasturi, apa de toaleta de trandafiri si... ochelari din dantela (!). de la prieteni oferite.

Ce am aflat cautand lana (de umplut jucariile de pe Ulabelula):

ca este mai greu decat imi imaginasem
ca lana este acum aruncata in padure, arsa sau vanduta la turci
ca a daraci egal a pregati lana pentru prelucrare, a o scarmana :)
ca spalatul si daracitul lanii este partea mai complicata si nu prea se mai ocupa multi cu asta pentru ca yeah, la moda sunt pilotele de export
ca mi-a venit sa vomit cand am vazut lana nedaracita (...)
ca nu ma las
ca lana e naturala, ok, dar este hipoalergenica, termorezistenta, ingrasa pamantul (?) si altele o gramada

PS: singurul lucru care nu e biodegradabil din poza este rochia doamnei cu flori de soc.

Ulabelula se incapataneaza sa nu faca, asa cum i s-a sugerat, jucarii tip monstrii, chiar daca sunt dragute si chiar daca se poarta. Ulabelula o arde mai pe clasic :), dar promite sa se mai joace cu materiale si alte modele curand. Ulabelula vrea sa fie mai responsabila si sa isi umple produsele cu lana de la tarani (in cautarea lanii de aur a inceput deja). Ulabelula este inconstanta, are zile fara chef de croit sau perioade cand lucreaza noptile. Ulabelula intalneste oameni, unii doar pentru 60 de secunde. Ulabelula a intalnit si vechi cunostinte si atunci a stat ore de vorba si a primit retete de biscuiti si vesti despre ce mai fac ursii ulabelulizati. Iar pe canicula, Ulabelula ar vrea sa croseteze paturi de lana colorate :).

este vorba despre un domn care nu se prea pricepe la cuvinte asa ca incearca sa vorbeasca despre el adunand intr-o imagine toate lucrurile care il definesc. voi cum il vedeti pe acest domn?

later edit: pentru ca nu v-a inspirat acest domn sau pentru ca nu vreti sa-mi scrieti (oare de ce?), am sa va spun cum il vad eu pe domnul din imagine: are cam 57-58 de ani si a fost profesor de stiintele naturii, nu militar (haina de ofiter cu toti butonii si tresele este doar un model de virilitate pentru el, a tanjit dupa viata cazona, dar n-a fost admis din motive despre care nici acum nu vrea sa vorbeasca). In vara lui '76, cand si-a lasat mustata, a facut furori pe digul din 2 Mai si de atunci mustata a ramas marca lui personala. Asculta de 30 de ani doar Cele patru anotimpuri de Vivaldi, valsurile lui Strauss, marsul nuptial de Mendelssohn, dar adoarme plictisit la opera si stramba din nas la chitara electrica. A fumat numai Carpati, dar s-a oprit pe la 45 cand s-a incheiat si perioada lui de glorie. Merge des la munte sa studieze flora montana (altfel cum?), dar nu-i place nici sa stea cu turistii in statiunile aglomerate, nici cu alpinistii la altitudini cu aptitudini de animale salbatice... si isi doreste companie pentru ca nu stie sa gateasca torturi si lui ii plac dulciurile si pentru ca de fiecare data cand e turul Frantei la TV nu are cu cine sa comenteze.
